As 2013 is viewed (quantifiably) as a drastic reduction in M&A activity down to $205 billion from $349 billion in 2012, it did have an interesting effect on positions related both to the deal market as well as operating market in job growth for 2014. Many experts came into 2014 predicting that we will not necessarily reach the marks set in 2012, we will see an increase over 2013. Mid-year data suggests that we are on that path.
While many operators began a more drastic shift in their focus to asset development starting late 2013 that added a 19% increase of professional & field engineering positions in Drilling, Completions, Civil/Facilities and Development & Exploitation Geoscience roles, those same operators also built up their bench strength and leadership strength in corporate development capacities. Specifically the market has shown an increase at the operator levels for senior staff A&D engineering and Exploration roles.
