MLH and the Department of Anesthesiology are inviting Anesthesiologists who share our commitment to join the subspecialized, patient-focused practice within the multifaceted department in vibrant Memphis, TN. Candidates currently serving as core faculty in an ACGME-accredited anesthesia residency or related subspecialty fellowship are highly encouraged to apply. This is a terrific opportunity for an ambitious current APD or PD to construct a brand-new program.

The positions we are recruiting for include:
  1. a Program Director (PD) for an ACGME Anesthesiology Residency Program; and
  2. subspecialty Faculty including Obstetrics and/or Critical Care and/or Transplant Anesthesiology as Section Chiefs and/or Fellowship Directors.

The Anesthesiology Residency & Fellowship Programs are start-up efforts. The PD and Faculty will have a blank slate to innovate and put in the systems and processes of their own choosing.

Anesthesia Data – Methodist Le Bonheur:
  • The Department of Anesthesiology is responsible for servicing MLH’s five adult, short-term, acute care hospitals that account for over 1,600 beds and perform nearly 25,000 diagnostic, therapeutic or palliative procedures.
  • The department has been collaborating with the Transplant Team to re-imagine the Transplant ICU, including staffing with double boarded anesthesiologists (Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine).
  • Anesthesia Care Team of ~30 physician anesthesiologists; 100 FTE
  • >40,000 cases | Case logs of >250 for Anesthesiologists + 350 cases for CRNA >40 anesthetizing locations | 5 facilities
  • General, Cardiac ICU, Vascular, Neuro, Ortho, ENT, GI, GYN, Plastics, Obstetrical + NORA1
  • Subspecialty areas: Cardiac, Neuro, Organ Transplantation (nationally-recognized leader in solid organ transplants for over 40 years, averaging 300-400 annual cases), OB (~6K deliveries), and Pediatrics at one of the nation’s Best Children’s Hospitals (Le Bonheur Children’s is covered by their own anesthesia group), etc.
  • Our 5-year plan includes development of an Anesthesiology Residency, creation of both ACGME and non-ACGME fellowships, comprehensive Pain Service (Acute and Chronic), developing a Methodist-Specific CRNA Program, and interdigitation of the Department of Anesthesiology with a fulsome PeriOperative Medicine Service.
Position Summary:

The Anesthesiology Residency Program Director [“PD”] is responsible for the strategic vision, long-term planning, and direction of the program that meets and exceeds ACGME requirements in collaboration with the Designated Institutional Official. The PD is expected to champion MLH’s culture and lead in the HRO journey with safety as an operational priority. Also, the PD fulfills all ACGME requirements, such commitments to mentorship of faculty and learners.


Preferred and/or Required Experience:

Beyond being Board Certified in Anesthesiology and/or either an applicable ACGME-recognized subspecialty (i.e., Critical Care Medicine, Obstetrical Anesthesiology), or a non-ACGME recognized subspecialty (i.e., Transplant Anesthesiology, Neuroanesthesiology, Trauma Anesthesiology), it is expected that applicants will have one or more of the following experiences and/or accomplishments:

  • Teaching residents and/or fellows
  • Scholarly accomplishments[1]
  • Program Director*, Fellowship Director*, Assistant/Associate Program Director*
  • Case logs demonstrating 250+ cases in area of expertise
  • License and DEA Certificates in Tennessee and Mississippi

*Preferably with Program start-up experience
